– my tasks included: Website migration and renovation (using a limited toolkit), as well as video editing and production.
This recent portfolio piece (olcsobbmunkasszallo.hu) was a special case, serving more as a friendly favor than a standard project. It was completed at a significantly reduced price, and it taught me some valuable lessons about the challenges of working without clear professional boundaries.
The Challenge: Limitations and Compatibility
The primary challenge was that the client operates in a “grey area” (or “off the books”), making their business model less compatible with Google’s products and services. This inherently hinders visibility and the ability to compete legally and effectively online.
My task was complicated by the limited materials provided—just a few images and short video clips. I had to leverage AI to generate a basic logo and some of the website text just to have foundational content to work with.
The Investment: Premium Tools from an “Honesty Box”
Even though this was an informal, contract-free job, I didn’t want to compromise on quality. I used premium WordPress plugins (from the HelloPack collection) to ensure the site was stable and secure. The modest annual fee for this toolkit ended up being half of the total “honesty box” payment I received for the entire project.
As part of a minimal marketing effort, I edited a short, musical YouTube “Short” for the Ictys channel using the provided footage. Surprisingly, it performed well, gaining 723 views in just a few days, even before the channel was officially launched.
The Lesson: Drawing the Line
In the end, I had to be transparent with my acquaintance: the amount paid covered the creation of the website and this minimal marketing push. However, I could not guarantee incoming calls or leads. Our offers are made to humans, not search robots. If potential customers find a better—perhaps legal—option elsewhere, my influence and toolkit are very limited.
As a Christian entrepreneur, this project solidified a crucial lesson for me. In the future, I will not work without a contract, and I will certainly not support illegal or “grey market” activities, regardless of whether it’s for a friend or a “brother.”
There is no blessing on such work. Ictys serves the God of order.
